At the Samqwan Mawio’mi Water Gathering, the North Shore Mi’kmaq Tribal Council (NSMTC) brought together community members, Elders, leadership, and government partners for two days to focus on First Nations water rights, climate resilience, and legislative updates like Bill C-61.
Graphic recorder Brittany joined virtually on day 1 to digitally capture technical presentations on water quantity, drought impacts, and co-developed regulations, creating a visual that served as a reflection tool for the following day. On day 2, Brittany joined in-person and captured the live roundtable discussions. To make the graphic a hands-on, collaborative experience, Brittany held space on the graphic for attendees to contribute directly. Table cut-outs allowed participants to write down their reflections and place them directly onto the board:
Fish: attendees wrote their goals and priorities and added along a hand-drawn river.
Clouds: captured their worries and were placed high in the sky.
Water droplets: reflected their hopes for future generations raining down across the landscape.
NSMTC is utilizing the high-resolution graphics in their summary report and digital outreach to guide ongoing regional water advocacy.
