Case Study: Calgary Stampede Graphic Recording

A case study explores the details behind what went into a project, the challenges, approach, results, and what could be improved for next time. The live illustration we created at the Calgary Stampede is a good example of how to use interactive graphic recording at a large scale event. This case study gives a behind-the-scenes look at our planning, design process, and how the graphic recording had a lasting impact at the event.

The Calgary Stampede is one of the world’s largest rodeos and attracts upwards of 1.2 million people during the course of ten days in July. But it’s not only about the rodeo! There are exhibits on all aspects of agriculture – from chickens to growing veggies to sheering sheep. Many of the attendees are tourists from around the world, some of whom have little knowledge about agriculture in Canada.

Fuselight Creative Team: Interview with Tanya Gadsby

Tanya Gadsby is founder of Fuselight Creative (previously named “Drawing Out Ideas”), and has been graphic recording and animating since 2010. Born in New Zealand (and part Māori!), Tanya grew up in Canada’s far north in Iqaluit, Nunavut, and Whitehorse, Yukon.  Project manager Leslie Teixeira had a conversation with Tanya to find out more about how she got into graphic recording and why her theatre background is an excellent foundation for this work….

Flip Chart Note Taking: Tips for Non Graphic Recorders

When a meeting has multiple breakout groups, flip chart note taking can enhance and guide group discussions. During a breakout group discussion, one person is usually assigned as the “recorder,” and he or she rarely has a graphic recording background… so the notes might be illegible, scattered, or too lengthy. The basic fundamentals of graphic recording can enhance flip chart note taking or the use of large visual templates when facilitating discussions. Whether you’re a facilitator wanting to improve your flip charting, a volunteer scribe, or a sketchnoter… you don’t have to be an artist to take effective notes!

Interactive Graphic Recording: Engaging People at Conferences

Graphic recording delivers the most value when we incorporate an interactive component for participants in your conference. Rather than just being a “pretty picture,” interactive graphic recording becomes something the group directly contributes to and builds. It makes a tremendous difference in people feeling ownership for the graphics, and the graphic recording will be more authentic and capture everyone’s voice. Interactive graphic recording can be as simple as providing an opportunity for people to add their ideas on sticky notes, to more fulsome engagement through group builds and three dimensional displays!

Levels of Graphic Recording: What’s Best for Your Conference?

You’re thinking about hiring a graphic recorder for your organization’s upcoming conference, retreat, or workshop. But it’s important to understand there are different levels of graphic recording, and each has a different impact on your audience.

Before finding the right graphic recorder for your conference, it’s important to consider the level of graphic recording you need. Do you want an eye-catching “wow” for conference attendees? Do you want to engage attendees on a deeper level? Can the graphics help guide strategy and difficult conversations?

There is no “right” level of graphic recording – each serves a different and valuable purpose! Below is an animated infographic describing the different levels of graphic recording:
